I'd be interested to see how many people would go to the polls and say the choices for the position are terrible. It would be a step above not voting because it would signal to candidates that there are people engaged in the political process who are at least potential voters.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00913025263562071489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7834674142259414016.post-30220084776639443282015-11-05T15:30:57.955-05:002015-11-05T15:30:57.955-05:00I think one reason so many opted out of voting thi...I think one reason so many opted out of voting this time is the candidates sucked. Put half the savings toward paying down debt and half toward investments in education and infrastructure (particularly energy). With lower debt we're more willing and able to spend our way up out of recession, and we have a better base of knowledge, skills, and technology to face our new challenges. Instead we got a small amount of increased take home pay for the typical family compared to the slightly higher tax scenario, and an Iraq that has no Saddam but is just as likely to have people killed and to breed terrorists as before we went in.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05513418157074593712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7834674142259414016.post-72860557534551323132012-05-11T07:10:39.127-04:002012-05-11T07:10:39.127-04:00I should just only dream about such talent in mast...I should just only dream about such talent in masters thesis about this good post accomplishing. The decrease in state/federal funding could be to blame for the increased commoditization of students...

other things that come to mind include the recent NYT study that found that studying for a test is actually more effective than studying material http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/21/science/21memory.html

Also-- I liked your comment about returning to trade-school focus and allowing students to "train" instead of just study. Training seems more practical and pragmatic, and the tough recession economy seems to inspire a return to the pragmatic point of view that was once prevalent in certain professions such as journalism . However, the history of journalism education shows that one of the biggest battles was to convince people that journalism wasn't a trade, but a profession, and so the training aspects slowly lost ground to a more well-rounded liberal education, and this theme of "professionalization" is actually one of the biggest hurdles to returning to a more pragmatic educational approach. Keep up the good bloggin dude...and I'll leave you with a nice quote from Mr. Dewey from my thesis about the transformation of the J-School:

In November of 1894, while at the newly opened University of Chicago, the great educational reformer John Dewey wrote a letter to his first wife Alice Chipman where he describes all of the essential elements in his philosophy of the school:

"There is an image of a school growing up in my mind all the time; a school where some actual & literal constructive activity shall be the centre & source of the whole thing, & from which the work should be always growing out in two directions – one the social bearings of that constructive industry, the other the contact with nature which supplies it with its materials."

~BrinkAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7834674142259414016.post-4351445331724247042011-01-12T12:04:01.899-05:002011-01-12T12:04:01.899-05:00The Daily Show take on it was great. The fact that the book is sympathetic to Jim and not at all promoting racism makes it completely ridiculous to whitewash it and remove some of the context of the 1880s when it was written and the ~1830s when it was set.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05513418157074593712noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7834674142259414016.post-7499011129860215702011-01-10T15:05:18.608-05:002011-01-10T15:05:18.608-05:00I have actually seen a few things on his YouTube s...I have actually seen a few things on his YouTube site.
